This is about the guy that built The Hermitage
You will see a bunch of pictures below on the Hermitage of Cat Island. This place was built by one man his name is Father Jerome Born 1876 pass away 1956. During the time he was at Cat Island he started building this place. Sighting Como Hill this is 216 feet above sea level. They called him Franciscan. A top of the highest hill in the Bahamas, he built a tiny chapel of the Holy Spirit, a small living space, bell tower and later a guest room. He was tall and sender but his hermitage embodied his desire to be lowly, humble and poor.
while here in Cat island he walked every where. from one end to the other. Took a boat ride with Victor Ferguson who later married and settled in Freetown. Local people helped toting water and supplies and in building the various churches
Father Jerome is remembered as such a nice man, generous, humorous and kind. His stone structures are lasting act of worship. The 14 stations of the cross are craved into the rocky path and steps that lead to the top of Mount Alvernia. Early on Good Friday morning Cat islanders are joined by visitors for the traditional Way of the Cross devotion, a prayerful ascent up this special hill.
