I am not sure if this is Thursday, Friday morning. Don made us oatmeal for breakfast. Hey this is such a good breakfast. My dad use to say, oatmeal sticks to our ribs. I think he was trying to say, this is good for you and it will keep you warm. We use to live up in Webster, New York. Up there they have SNOW and COLDWEATHER.
Well we started out pulling up the stairs. This way, we know the stairs will be safe to walk on.
These steps have a over hang in the back of the kick plate. So we needed to sand down about 1" to 2" 1/4" (depth) so the board will slip in and we can screw it down.
We did look around at Home Depot, for something to make it easier to have the back of the step into the over hang. Rooter or something. like that. But Don told me that he has a sander. Thinking why spend more money just for make the step fit?
So saving money is a good thing. The sander worked great and all is going together.
A couple of the steps, wood, has a small pieces of the lumber ripped off while moving it in place. So Don got out his glue and fixed them up.
As we were taking the old steps out. We left some nails in place. So Don got out his Dremel and he put a cutting blade on is and it cut the nails off flush on the lumber staying in place.
Before we put any new lumber down, Don stained the area under the new lumber. He is just trying to protect as much as he can.
Okay started pulling up the top deck.
We did have to make up 2 pieces of 4"x 4"x 41" posts that hold the railing up.
This is Don's wife (Meg) She has been coming out to see what is going on and the neat thing is Don would ask her what she thinks about this and that. Here we needed to reinforce the bottom step. The reason is the way the post is mounted. We can not put a full board, step in place. So these is a small area on the bottom step that needed to be reinforce.
So this is the bottom step. Don needed to sand the back of the step so it would slide in place and screw is down..
Like I said before I have lost track of time while doing this job. So I am thinking now this is Saturday. The reason the next pictures that are coming up, is the Sunday Mass at Don and his wife Meg's church.
Folks this was a big job and Don and myself are getting up in age and thinking, WHY? would we do this job?
Oh well we started and we need to get it done by Tuesday that is coming up. So we did work late most nights. Thinking around 6 to 7pm.
The real neat thing about this trip is I had a chance to spend some time with Don and his wife. Getting some what caught up on all that has been going on over the last three years or so. The reason I say three years. That was the last time I was up this way.
I really am hoping and praying that they get a chance this fall or winter to spend some time with us here in Fort Pierce.
Folks as I am back home now, I have a few small jobs to get done. I will be trying to keep my blog some what up to date.
