Guanano Church Planting

Praise: It has been a
very dry month and we thought our well had gone dry. This
would have been more than an inconvenience. We bathe down at
the river, and when necessary wash our clothes down at the
river. But we don’t want to have to resort to drinking river
water. Moise is one of the few friends we have who doesn’t
might dropping 30 feet down into a wet, dark hole in the
ground. He found there was still water in the well, but
roots had grown in and put a crimp in the water line,
blocking the flow. In a short while, we reset the pump in a
better position and have water again. Thank you, Moise!
Pray: Cida has been
helping us with our children’s Sunday School since June. Our
Sunday School is taught in Portuguese because there are a
number of children from different ethnic groups who don’t
speak or understand Guanano. Mission leaders are now
considering where to place Cida in future ministry. One of
the options is for her to become a full member of the
Guanano team. She is praying about this and we are praying
about this as well. We’re not sure what a full time status
would look like as most of our ministry takes place in the
Guanano language, which Cida doesn’t speak. We need the
Lord’s wisdom in this decision. Would you please pray
with us?
Praise: Our Sunday
morning church services are more like small group Bible
studies. The teacher often interrupts his own teaching to
ask if there are any questions or further comments. On a
recent Sunday we were teaching in Romans 8. The topic was
how God views his people differently than those who don’t
belong to him. The unsaved do not have the Holy Spirit and
consequently do not possess God’s life. God’s people do.
Gustavo interrupted the teaching to share the Gospel with a
young man named Marcos. Marcos is from the village where we
lived in Colombia. Gustavo said, “Marcos, you may not know
what we are talking about when we talk about people who have
God’s life and those who don’t.” He then read John 3:36 to
him and explained how “eternal life” is God’s life and the
only way to possess it is to receive Christ as Savior. Then
we begin a life connected to God instead of being separated
from him by our sin. He then read Acts 4:12 and explained
that Jesus is the only one who can rescue us from the
condemnation of our sin and the consequences of being
separated from God. As I listened to Gus’s simple yet
effective explanation of the Gospel, I wondered how many
church services at home have the freedom to interrupt the
sermon to share the Gospel with an unsaved friend. I am
thankful for the shape God’s work has taken among the
Guanano people.
Praise: This is the month
we celebrate God sending his son Jesus into the world to
save sinners. Carol and I want to wish you a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year. We want to thank you for
your prayer support throughout this past year. May the Lord
richly bless your families and your churches.
